About Matt

Matt’s practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, private equity and corporate law, with a particular emphasis on the defence sector. Drawing on his background in technology and engineering, he advises emerging, high-growth and established companies on strategic transactions, investments and corporate matters.

A graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada and former Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, Matt brings a rare combination of military, legal and business experience to his practice. Clients turn to Matt for strategic advice informed by his longstanding relationships across the defence sector and his deep understanding of its commercial, operational and regulatory landscape.

Prior to joining Blakes, Matt practised at two notable Canadian law firms in Toronto and New York. He also brings valuable in-house and commercial experience from his executive leadership roles with a private equity-backed technology company and with private and public companies operating in the regulated cannabis sector.

Matt is fluent in English and French.

Professional Activities

Matt is a member of the board of directors of Daytrippers Children’s Charity (DCC). DCC raises funds to send children on day trips who would otherwise not have that opportunity.
